Northwest Nuisance Wildlife Control traps, removes, manages and
controls most animal species, including muskrats.

Muskrat |
Our muskrat control services include
the removal and
control of problem muskrats from wherever they are causing
problems. People
that live on small and large lakes have problems with this small rodent
eating their plants and burrowing into their yards. Muskrats also
burrow into docks, retainer walls and under trees, creating erosion and
other environmental damages. As
muskrats are generally found in water, our control programs for these
rodents mostly involves lethal trapping. Non-lethal control
is
also available. We also repair
damaged retainer walls and docks, protect plants from muskrat damage
and offer habitat modifications to prevent the occurance of
muskrats. More muskrat control services are available. Just give us a
call! Muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) Muskrats
are the largest microtine rodents in North America. Muskrats
spend most of their life in water, but
will occasionally venture to land for food.
Like
the beaver and nutria, muskrats have large webbed back feet and small,
short front feet. The length of muskrats ranges between 18 to
24
inches, with 10 to 12 inches consisting of its tail.
The
tail is laterally flattened on both sides, is scaled like beaver's and
contains little hair. A muskrat's average weight is
2-1/2
pounds and coloration is generally reddish brown to light tan to dark
brown and sometimes black. Muskrats are very prolific and will
have 3 litters per year.
Gestation
period is 25 to 30
days with a litter size of 4 to 8 with an average of 6. The
live
span of a muskrat in the wild has been known to be up to 4
years,
but one year is the average.
Muskrats
are hosts to large numbers of endo and ectoparasites and serve as
carriers for a number of diseases. Our
Muskrat Control Programs consist of non-lethal and lethal control
methods.
