River Otter Control and Information
Northwest Nuisance Wildlife Control traps, removes, manages and
controls most animal species, including river otters.

Captured River Otter |
Our river otter control services
include the removal and
control of problem river otters from ponds, lakes, streams, aquaculture
facilities and wherever they are causing problems. Here
at NNWC, we solve many river otter problems each year. River otters
will enter under homes, boathouses, boats and docks, leaving their
droppings behind. The odor is so strong that we also specialize
in cleaning up their mess and keeping them out, once and for
all.
River Otters (Lutra canadensis) The
river otter is in the weasel family. It has a long and streamlined
body, short legs and a robust tail. River otters have prominent
whiskers, thick necks and shoulders and webbed feet. Their
color is dark brown to black except on their chin, throat and chest,
where it is usually lighter brown to beige.
Adult males
measure 48 to 60 inches in length and weigh in at about 25
pounds. Adult females are smaller measuring between 33 to 44
inches and weighing about 19 pounds.
The river otter
spends most of its time in the water, but spends some time on land, as
well. These mammals are best known for their seemingly
continuous playful behavior.
Once out of the water, they
sometimes become a major problem for property owners. Their diet
is primarily fish but, they will also eat shellfish, crayfish,
amphibians, reptiles, crabs, ducks, geese, muskrats and just about
anything else that they can catch and kill. Because of the river
otter's diet, we are often called to control these animals at fish
hatcheries, fish farms and the like.
