Porcupine Control and Information
Northwest Nuisance Wildlife Control traps, removes, manages and
controls most animal species, including porcupines.

Captured porcupine |
Our porcupine control services
include the removal and
control of problem porcupines from urban, rural areas. Here
at NNWC we are quite familiar with porcupines. We find them
in forested areas, but we also find them in the urban areas around
Puget
Sound.
Washington porcupines are found on both sides of
the Cascade
Mountains of Washington State, but we are even finding them on the
outskirts of metropolitan areas. A few years ago, we even found
one in
Ballard, Washington. Our porcupine control programs consist of
trapping, habitat modification, fencing
and more.
More information regarding porcupines is below.
Porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) Porcupines
are short-legged, slow, heavy bodied animals of the Rodent
Family. Adults are 25 to 30 inches long and weigh between 8
and 30 pounds.
Porcupines have sharp barbed quills for
defense and can have up to 30,000 quills. They also have guard
hair throughout their body. There are no quills on the underside
of the animal. The porcupine breeds in autumn and has a 7
month gestation period, usually producing only one
offspring.
Porcupines do extensive
damage to trees. Gnawing on trees and branches will kill the trees
through diseases and tree rot. Porcupines will eat fruits of all
kinds including sweet corn, grain, alfalfa and hay.
Porcupines
are attracted to salt and will sometimes enter horse stables and
chew on salty horse tack. Leather tack products seem to be a favorite,
including expensive saddles.
In timber forests, the porcupine can cause millions of dollars of tree damage. Our Porcupine Control Programs consist of non-lethal and lethal
control methods.
